Hi Isabel: There is a paper by Fernandez-Prada et al in the April 1997 issue
of Infection and Immunity showing that the TUNEL-reaction labels Shigellae
contained within macrophages which were themselves undergoing oncosis as a
result of this intracellular parasitism. Unless due care is taken this
labelling could be misinterpreted to mean that the macrophages were
undergoing apoptosis. It is my understanding that the peri-nuclear chromatin
condensation patterns observed in apoptotic cells remain the gold standard
for confirming apoptosis. These patterns are easily recognized, but might not
occur until relatively late in the apoptotic process. I hope this helps.
