I believe that Jose was asking about loci, not alleles. He also asked
about "a species" as if there was a general answer for all species.
Apparently, there is not. The number of MHC loci, and the number of
alleles at each locus, varies from species to species. It's a hard
question to answer, because it is not very specific.
