The following series of messages are being posted to several of our
most active newsgroups to make sure that our users are informed of
these important developments. I apologize in advance to those people
subscribed to multiple mailing lists who may receive extra copies
due to this crossposting.

PLEASE BE SURE that any responses are directed only to the
bionet.general newsgroup or to one of the mailing addresses for that
group: bioforum at net.bio.net or bioforum at daresbury.ac.uk.

BIOFORUM/bionet.general is the only appropriate forum for followup
discussion, and I have added the following lines in each message header
to redirect replies:

          > Reply-To: bioforum at net.bio.net
          > Followup-To: bionet.general

PLEASE LOOK AT ANY REPLIES CAREFULLY BEFORE SENDING as they should be
redirected back to the BIOFORUM/bionet.general newsgroup!! DO NOT
ASSUME THAT A REPLY WILL BE PRIVATE!!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

As anyone active on the Internet is painfully aware, the net is being
confronted by a growing number of problems. Solutions to these
problems for the BIOSCI/bionet newsgroups are available but will
require additional labor to implement. The BIOSCI grant will be
ending in 1996, and I have had a longstanding agreement with NSF to
make this project self-supporting while retaining free access to the
services for the research community.

Since all of these issues are intertwined, I need to address them
together. These issues are of the utmost importance to the continuing
success of BIOSCI/bionet in the face of mounting challenges on the
net.

If you have ever derived any benefit from the use of these newsgroups,
I encourage you to take the time to read the following messages
carefully and act on the information presented.

In three subsequent messages (labeled PART 1, 2, and 3 in their
Subjects:), I will address the following issues:

o Growing volume of messages (both interesting and "noisy") *and*
   unwanted ads

PART 1) how to sort the wheat from the chaff effectively
PART 2) how to minimize or eliminate the chaff on BIOSCI/bionet

o The BIOSCI Sponsorship Program (PART 3) - How we intend to ensure
the continuation of BIOSCI/bionet funding apart from the
government, keep the service free to end users, and avoid
   broadcasting commercials.

Thanks in advance for your time, attention, and support!!

				Sincerely,

				Dave Kristofferson
				BIOSCI/bionet Manager
