As part of a government funded project we are trying to develop maize single
nucleotide polymorphic markers from existing markers such as RFLPs. But in the
case of RFLPs we are not finding much polymorphism when we compare the commonly
used maize lines. I understand from the literature that in humans one can find
~2 single nucleotide polymorphism's per kb of "random" genomic sequence. Does
anybody have any information on the "average" number of single nucleotide
polymorphism's per kb of maize DNA? And is the number of polymorphism's
dependent upon the status of the DNA, i.e. coding versus non-coding etc?
Finally, is anybody thinking about setting up a database of SNiPs in maize?
Any help would be appreciated.
