We (I) think that kernel rows is primarily genetic and would not expect
that stress would affect it much if any, I would expect the primary effect
to be on number of kernels per row - stress particularly after flowering
will induce abortion of kernels. The major effect of early stress would be
expected to be on ear length, which will also affect number of kernels per

Subject: Early Water Stress
I have a current study where varying levels of water stress (0, 1, 2,
3, 4, and 5 weeks delay in irrigation) occurred PRIOR to silking of
corn. After initiation of irrigation for a given treatment they were
subsurface drip irrigated at 0.4 inches/day until the calculated soil
water deficit was in an acceptable range and then maintained at that
level. Over the summer that's required between 18-19 inches of
irrigation, so far.
I know these levels of stress will affect ear length size. My
question is would there be much expectation for different number of
kernel rows around the cob??????. There is only one hybrid, Pioneer
3162. Is number of rows primarily genetic??. If not is it set at an
earlier time than kernels/row (the length factor)?????
