Virginia Rhoades (nee Hatcher) passed away on December 19, 2001 at the
age of 94. She was a native of North Dakota and attended graduate
school at Cornell University. She was a student in the laboratory of
L.F. Randolph and made significant contributions to maize genetics,
with work on genetic factors of chromosome 10 and on pollen
development. Her Masters thesis, submitted in February 1934, was
entitled "A study of fertilization in Zea mays." While at Cornell,
she met Marcus M. Rhoades; the two were married in 1932. Marcus
passed away December 30, 1991 at the age of 88. Virginia gave up
research in favor of raising the couples two sons, Marcus junior and
William. According to Drew Schwartz, Virginia was "a gracious
hostess" and "presided over many a dinner table filled with students
or visiting scientists."
