Population Studies - Spirals

Does anyone have information of the method of studying corn population
densities, where the rows are planted either as a spiral or radial rows
converging in the middle?  The purpose of showing where the plant
density began limiting the yield and ear size etc.

I have heard of such demonstrations, but have never seen any pictures or
protocols.
