[Maize] line development breeder

Reputable international company needs a Line Development Breeder to be based
in Lichtenburg, South Africa.

 

The LDB is responsible for the development of improved maize inbred lines
and hybrids utilizing the latest in breeding technologies for the South
African market. The incumbent will work together with other Breeders to
conduct a research program including population development, selection, the
operation of summer and winter nurseries and co-ordination of the hybrid
testing program.  The incumbent will also contribute to recruiting,
training, development and retention of personnel as well as budget
management and care and maintenance of company assets.

  

Position requirements: PhD in Plant Breeding and Genetics or MSc in Plant
Breeding and Genetics or related field with 3+ years plant breeding
experience. The successful candidate should have a strong background in
plant breeding, genetics, field plot technique and statistical analysis,
molecular biology and molecular marker applications. Experience in maize
breeding is preferred.

 

Proficiency with database applications, spreadsheet software, experimental
design, and statistics are required. The individual must be results
oriented, innovative and have proven leadership and organizational ability.
The ability to write and speak English fluently is essential. Applicants
must be in possession of a valid driver's license.

 

Desired skills/education/experience/attributes (ideal candidate):

1.     PhD in Plant Breeding and Genetics.

2.     Proven track record in a commercial corn breeding program, strong
knowledge of modern technical approaches to germplasm improvement.

3.     Proficient in the applications of molecular marker technology to
applied plant breeding.
