Research position in Portugal

Summary: We are seeking a highly motivated scientist to participate in a
research program that will provide critical insights into regulatory
mechanisms that control nitrogen metabolism in Medicago truncatula. This
project involves the discovery of novel regulatory and signal transduction
genes. Candidates should possess a PhD, together with relevant research
experience

Fellowship description: We are searching for a postdoctoral researcher to
integrate the group ³Molecular Biology of Nitrogen Assimilation² of IBMC.
The research will focus on the biochemical and genetic regulation of the
metabolic processes that are required for nitrogen assimilation in the model
legume Medicago truncatula. The group is attempting to dissect the mechanics
controlling nitrogen assimilation through reverse genetics and whole genome
approaches. The primary goal is to determine which factors, genetic and/or
biochemical, limit nitrogen assimilation by the plant and thus plant growth
and development. After these limitations are defined, the appropriate
generic alterations will be attempted to enhance plant productivity. The
project will use plants in which the activity of key metabolic enzymes has
been modified either by reverse genetics or by the use of specific
inhibitors to identify novel regulatory and signal transduction genes. The
research involves the use of functional genomics approaches together with
traditional tools of genetics, biochemistry, and physiology to dissect the
molecular mechanisms regulating gene expression and enzyme activities in
response to alterations in nitrogen metabolism. This work is currently in
progress, therefore, a qualified candidate would have the opportunity to
immediately begin to analyze transcriptomic profiles, identify important
genes and dissect their involvement in the control of nitrogen metabolism.
This could prove to be a fruitful position for an ambitious candidate since
there could be many research opportunities to work on new projects within
the lab.

Candidate requirements: The successful applicant should be a highly
motivated individual with a PhD in plant science or a related field and a
strong background in biochemistry and molecular biology preferably with
three years of research experience since the completion of their PhD.
Experience in plant transformation and in functional genomics tools and
bioinformatics are welcome. The applicant will be expected to demonstrate
creativity in framing and answering new questions enabled by the data, and
will have opportunity for professional growth and leadership

Contract terms: The appointment will be as a full research position with no
teaching obligations. The initial appointment is for two years and the term
will be extended for up to five years contingent upon progress. The salary
corresponds to a gross annual income of 43000 Eur (before taxes).

Application: The closing date for applications is 30th September, 2008.
Candidates should submit a letter of motivation that includes scientific
interests, Curriculum Vitae and three digitalized versions of letters of
reference, to IBMC Ciência 2008, Rua do Campo Alegre, 823, 4150-180 Porto,
Portugal or ciencia2008 from ibmc.up.pt
