We routinely use 0,01% Sodium pyrophosphate to reduce background effects in
both southerns and ordinary end-labelled gels. The NaPP is added to the gel and
running buffer, and works (apparently!) by mopping up exess radioactivity (not
being a chemist I cannot give a better explanation). Give it a try, anyway.
