What happens to 32P-labelled compounds?

At the risk of adding to the confusion regarding 32P and 32S, would the
decay of 32P result in a single stranded nick in a piece of double-stranded
DNA. I seem to remember some ancient data (from about 25 years ago) using
phage T4 that concluded that one double stranded break was produced for every
10 single-stranded breaks.
