I've also used ParaPlast tissue embedding medium(Oxford Labware, St.Louis)
which is "a compound of purified paraffin and plastic polymers of regulated
molecular weight". It seems to be a little less brittle at room temp than 
plain paraffin, and it doesn't seem to affect PCR.
