Effects of microwaving in tissue culture media

I know of one particular lab, which shall remain anonymous to keep them safe
from howls of laughter and ridicule, that uses the microwave to sterilize
micropipette tips. They reload their own boxes from bulk bags of tips (so they
are certainly contaminated), pop a dozen or so in the microwave on high for 10
minutes, and have not had a contamination incident. I personally still prefer
to autoclave mine, but maybe thats only for the abstract reassurance of a strip
of white tape that turns colors in the heat....
