PCR'd DNA vs RNA probes for northerns

In my lab we find that cDNA probes work better than RNA probes in
general. When we run cDNA probes on gel we get a tight band on film but
when we run RNA probes we get a fairly broad band suggesting that RNA of
different sizes are present (NOTE: I am talking about RNA probes
generated by in vitro transcription only of course). This probably adds
to background and furthermore, since DNA is more stable than RNA you'll
probably get less background with cDNA.
