Fluorescence measurements are rarely reported in absolute units.
This is because fluorescence is affected by numerous factors which
vary from one experimental situation to another. These factors include
excitation light quality and quantity, instrument geometry and
detector characteristics. Consequently most analytical fluorescence
measurements are calibrated with standards or simply reported as
relative units on a hopefully linear scale.
