I think this method was explored by Vogelstein and Gillespie in their PNAS
paper about glass binding of DNA on which "geneclean" methods are based. They
decided that glass wool doesn't offer enough surface area for efficient recovery
of the DNA. I am actually intrigued with the idea of using a glass prefilter
cartridge (set up for syringe filters) as a means of purifying DNA, but I
haven't looked into it or tried it.
