direct sequencing from chromosome?

Has anyone out there tried direct automated cycle sequencing (we have an 
Applied Biosysytems setup) on bacterial chromosomal DNA? We have some sequence 
from a partial clone (hence the primer), but are having a devil of a time 
cloning the remainder. Any experiences (e.g. what DNA concentration is 
really necessary) would be very much appreciated.
