Bacterial cell death

There's a galE mutation in E. coli that when mutated causes cells to lyse in 
the presence of galactose; but the cells grow fine without the sugar.
If I remember correctly, the cells accumulate a metabolic intermediate 
that they can't process further because of the mutation, and the 
accumulated substrate causes lysis.
