Carbocyanine dye DiOC5(3)

Does anyone know of the mechanism by which DiOC5(3) inserts into bacterial 
membranes? This is for some flow cytometery research I'm doing. I have a few 
papers, yet the all seem to hint at a possible mechanism. Any help would be 
greatly appreciated.
