Dear Netters,

I have received a lot of helpful advice for retrieving GIF and
JPEG pictures from gopher. I wish to thank everybody.
Please find attached a summary of very useful suggestions
that I received.

Prachya Kongtawelert from Northern Thailand proposed
to use ZTerm0.9 instead of Kermit. ZTerm0.9 works
beautifully and avoids all the problems, since it uses
Zmodem which is very fast and has a file type auto-recognize
feature. ZTerm0.9 is Macintosh shareware.

Other suggestions were:

Accessing Gopher with Kermit, one should not issue command "D"
for downloading, but "s" for saving. The binary file will
then be stored on the mainframe. For later transfer to the
PC or Mac, issue command "Kermit -i" (unix) or type
"Kermit" and then "set file type binary". The local
Kermit (on the PC or Mac) has to be set to "binary"
and "data fork" as well.
