PAGE gels cracking

Two different problems are being discussed on this thread: gel curling and
cracking after drying during long term storage (1) and cracking during drying
(2). There is a solution to both problems. Companies like Novex (San Diego,
CA) and ISS (Natick, MA) sell drying frames. You sandwich the wet gel between
two wetted cellophane sheets and let it dry overnight. Unless you start with a
tear or nick in the gel, they never crack upon drying. Now for the second
problem. Adding glycerol to the last wash solution will prevent cracking
during drying, but the gell will eventually disintegrate. Novex makes a
reagent called Gel-Dry that you use as the last wash (must be used with the
drying frames - not compatible with vacuum drying). I have been using it for
about two years, and the first gels I handled this way are still crackless.
