Ribotyping querery

Greetings, netters

I am looking for a general description of ribotyping, specifically its 
applications in bacterial taxonomy and classification. My only reference to 
date is a rather open-ended account in "Molecular Systematics" (Hillis and 
Moritz) and its description is too vague. Any reference will do, even a 
(gasp) Scientific American article. Especially a Scientific American article!
All I need is a general overview.
