As far as theory goes a book I find easily readable (which incidentally, also has very good diagrams) is Recombinant DNA by Watson et al. Scientific American Books. I am a molecular biology 'virgin' too and I felt the pitch perfect. It is also a very good price. DCL Montpellier France
