Drying gels w/o vacuum?

Yes, I do. I do it for many years.

You can just wrap the gel in gel-drying film (dialysis tube like stuff), fix
it on a glass plate with robber bands. The gel will dry overnight in air. This
works well with 0.75 mm gel. 

I guess it will work too by sticking the gel in a book if you do not need the
books.
