The ref is Biotechniques 15#4 p? (it's not on my copy)

The essential part is run the pcr in the presence of EtBr.  The picture
is pretty cool but it seems to me that the pcr could be affected by the
EtBr and it may be possible (better?) to add EtBr after the reaction.
