Sequencing PCR products

I'm looking for people's experience with sequencing PCR products. Several
years ago, I tried sequencing a gel-purified restriction fragment
(approx 1.5 kb) WITHOUT success but WAS successful using the plasmid
clone as template. I reasoned that I was not able to keep the gel-pure
linear DNA denatured long enough or complete enough for the
primers to anneal.

Would I not run into the same problem with PCR products? Would cycle
sequencing get around this problem?
