use of sodium salicylate prior to autoradiography

Numerous papers mention soaking of SDS gels containing labeled protein
mixtures in 1M sodium salicylate prior to autoradiography.  However, none
of the papers I read gives a proper reference.  Does anybody know if there
is one?  If so, I would appreciate a message, either here or directly to
