help with 5' race

Hi!
We have tried twice now to get our 5'end for our sequence using
race protocole. I just saw in the Gibco catalog that there is an
RNAase H step to degrade the RNA after the reverse transcription.
Is this absolutely necessary?
The two times we tried the procedure all the clones were non 
specific.  We are getting very frustrated. Any advice will  be
much appreciated.
