Retard gel buffering conditions

I think somewhere along the line I've switched my buffer concentration 
without realising. Is it possible that large amounts of tailing from the
probe in the lanes of my gel are due to inadequate buffering? Also, the
bands of protein retarded are not very tight. Any general hints on retarding
would be helpful.
