Nigel,
	Ambion, Inc. sells a kit called "CAT-Direct" that is based on
ribonuclease protection, and quantitates CAT expression by measuring CAT
mRNA rather than enzyme activity.  I have never used the kit, so I can't
tell you much about it.  (I don't work for Ambion, either).  The phone #
