Cell Attachment to culture flasks.

I'm currently looking into the organisation of the basal matrix which
cells from cloned cell lines use to attach themselves to culture flasks. 
In particular I'm interested in whether this matrix is :-

1)  Underneath the cells, between them and the flask surface, so that the
cells simply sit on top of this.

or

2) Surrounding the cells so that each cell is joined to it's neighbours by
a protein matrix.

or

3)  Either one of the above depending on the cell line and/or culture medium.
