transfection variation w/luciferase

We are having a lot of trouble with plate to plate variation with our 
transfections. The variation does not seem to be due to the transfection 
effeciency itself since the internal control SV-lacZ numbers vary less 
than 2 fold, whereas the luciferase numbers can vary 5-10 fold on 
duplicate plates. I suspect there is some problem with luciferase 
extraction and/or degradation.  Has anyone had this problem and know how 
to solve it?
