why fix sequencing gel?

32P sequencing gels are fixed in acetic acid so they can be exposed at
room temperature without drying down.The fixing prevents diffusion  of the
bands at room temperature. However, don't fix the gel and then place at
-70 - you get a gel that's cracked to smithereens!
