Dear Heidi,
Short wave UV can cause major problems with subcloning. If you do not have access to long wave, a good alternative is to run two lanes of your sample. Stain one, cut it out and use the remaining gel slice as a template for cutting out your band of interest from the non-UV, non-ethidium-exposed DNA.
