D-aspartate in bacteria

Can someone tell me if D-aminoacid like D-Asp is known to be produced
by bacteria from Bacilli species ? (Our experiments suggest that it is
probably the case). What is the interest for these bacteria to
synthesize such D-Asp residue ? Is this residue subsequently
incorporated in some peptide-like compound ?
