Legal Polymerase??

Dear Netters,

     I am writing for a friend who is not on the net about a legal question.  He
has access to a "thermostable polymerase" which is made elsewhere,
using a published protocol.  It is not known whether the enzyme is Taq or
one of the other commercially available polymerases, or a non-patented enzyme.

     What are the legal issues with using thermostable polymerases, either
patented or non-patented? He has no intention of selling the enzyme.
