Thank you for the numerous answers I have received. Most of you are correct, the type of result we obtained is the one observed when reactions loaded in a palindromic order are read from the wrong side of the film. The small twist here is that the student had loaded some clones ACGT and others TGCA! That's one argument against loading gels at one o'clock in the morning.... Alan Escher
