When I had problems with Zap rescue a few years ago, I finally 
tracked the cause down to the cells I was using - I was using XLIB
from a plate that was 2-3 weeks old. Because you need the pilus for
infection with the helper phage, it's essential to select for the
presence of the F plasmid. When I re-plated the cells on Tet, the
rescue worked perfectly. This works for XLIB, not sure about SOLR.
