Cambridge Healthtech Institute, producer of meetings of interest to
biomedical professionals, is announcing their upcoming meeting,
"Strategies for Identification of Novel Targets for Drug Discovery,"
to be held January 8-9, 1996 at the Hyatt LaJolla in San Diego,
Almost all modern drug discovery efforts, whether based on screening,
structure-based design or other approaches, depend first on the
selection of a biomolecular target. The development of breakthrough
drugs, for indications lacking any current therapy, is even more
dependent on finding novel targets. Receptors and ligands, enzymes,
genes and other biomolecules, from both humans or infectious
organisms, can be appropriate targets. Confirmation of a new target
as suitable requires characterization of its functionality, and thus
its biological role in the disease process. This program examines in
detail a number of innovative strategies available for this purpose,
including the rapidly expanding use of genome-based approaches.
