I have been repeating preps because I figured it was labile.>

I am not sure that there is any single proper way. The following works 
for non-isotopically labelled RNA.
i) In 2.5 volumes EtOH + 0.05 volumes NaOAc, ie as a precipitate.
ii) In DEPC treated water at -20C.

We have been keeping RNA intact for years like this.
