Northerns of large RNA?

I have also had problems with large message (around 11kb) but it was not 
in the transfer. The problem was in the running of the gels--they ran 
strangely (while smaller things ran as expected), and I could see arcs of 
smears, never in the same places, and there would always be a few clear 
bands. It was always a visible pattern, such that lanes 1&2 were tight, 
lanes 3-8 were a smear arc, 9-11 were tight, 12-18 were another smear 
arc, and 19&20 were clear again.
