Try using the RNA markers from GIBCO BRL.  We routinely use 20 ng/lane. 
Instead of staining for them, we hybridize with a probe made from BRL's 1
kb DNA ladder (about 50,000 cpm/ml hybridization fluid).  Works like a
charm.
