I don't know of a review on CAT asaay protocols, but if you surf to
Promega's WWW site (www.promega.com) & download their tech document on
CAT assays (cat # E1000) you will have a comparison of two different
detection methods.  The first outlines detection by extracting the
assay sample with mixed xylenes.  The butyrylated chloramphenicol
partitions into the solvent phase, the un-butyrylated into the aqueous
phase.  Promega claim it is more sensitive than detection by TLC; it
certainly is quicker & easier to perform!
