DNA yield from plant tissue.

I have tried extracting both RNA and DNA from cycads.  Using a hot phenol
method, I got something red co-precipitating with my DNA and RNA pellets.  
The OD readings seemed normal, but the yield looked low when run on a gel, 
and they were poor RT-PCR and PCR templates.  Using CTAB actually helped 
me by removing the red contaminant, which was presumably some sort of 
secondary metabolite in cycads.
