Cambridge Symposia, organized to serve the scientific community
through the administration of interdisciplinary conferences in the
biological sciences, is announcing their upcoming meeting, "Nuclear
Structure-Gene Expression Interrelationships," to be held on
April 30-May 6, 1996; Bolton Valley, Vermont.

Topic Description:

It is becoming increasingly evident that nuclear structure contributes
to, and in turn is regulated by transcription.  Structural parameters
of the nucleus are functinally linked to control of cell growth,
tissue-specific and developmentally expressed genes.  The objective of
the meeting will be to critically evaluate the mechanisms by which
components of nuclear architecture mediate DNA replication and genomic
imprinting, integration of regulatory activities at independent
promoter elements, responsiveness to multiple signaling pathways which
modulate transcription and RNA processing, nuclear-cytoplasmic
exchange of regulatory factors and nuclear export of gene transcripts.
Molecular, cellular and biochemical and genetic approaches will be
considered for experimentally addressing gene regulatory mechanisms
associated with chromatin structure and higher order nuclear
organization.  Interrelationships between structural parameters of the
nucleus and control of gene expression will be assessed from the
perspectives of:  1) accessibility of promoter elements for
interactions with transcription factors, 2) nuclear domains which
support transcription and/or RNA processing, 3) gene localization, 4)
targeting of transcription factors, and 5) structural constrains on
promoter organization which relate to competency for responsiveness to
transcriptional regulatory signals.  Translation of fundamental
biological regulatory mechanisms operative in cell structure-gene
expression interrelationships to clinical diagnosis and therapeutics
will be explored.
