I hesitate to ask why you want to use expensive DMEM... but... Are you sure someone hasn't added a vial of Pen/Strep to the DMEM :-) That seems to be standard practice in our lab ! If not just check the genotype of DH5a and see if it "requires" anything that may be absent, eg, Thiamine, Thymine - everything else should be there. John
