Neil at molbiol.uct.ac.za has the question of how to selectively remove rRNA
from total nucleic acid preps

One method worth trying:

Add one quarter volume of 10 M lithium chloride (sterile and .22 um
filtered) to the RNA prep. Hold overnight at 4 C. Centrifuge at 12,000
g for 20 min at 4 C. The LiCl pelleted material should contain most of
the rRNA. Precipitate the remaining RNA from the supermnatant with 2.5
volumes of cold ethanol.

You may lose mRNA using this method so check how your Northerns go in a
trial run.
