T cell receptor PCR

Is someone using PCR to study T cell receptor rearrangements?
I am following the McCarthy paper, setting up 4 reactions per patient VJ1,
VJ2, D1J2, D2J2 but I do not get any specific band, lots of background
(higher than 300bp).
Does anyone have any suggestions, protocols, conditions, etc.?
