Ethidium question

In experiments on the mutagenicity of EtBr (McCann et al.,1975 PNAS 
72:5135-5139), ethidium produced 200 His+ revertants/ug, while the smoke 
from a single cigarette produced 18,200 revertants in a related strain 
that carried the same mutation.
