Wax Beads for PCR

We have been using Hot Start tubes for cycle sequencing and PCR, with
good success. However, we recently ran out of tubes due to a delay in
receiving an order. We found that our reactions did not work well with
oil, so we purchased some paraffin from a local supermarket, and made our
own beads, and they work just as well as the hot start tubes using normal
500ul micro-centrifuge tubes. We thus go from about a dollar a tube for
Hot Start tubes to a penny or two!
